Summer’s Here! 5 Essential Steps to Get Your Pool Sparkling Clean!

Summer is finally upon us—and there’s nothing better than diving into a crystal-clear pool on a hot afternoon. But if your pool’s been dormant all spring, it may need a little TLC before you cannonball in. Follow these five essential steps to get your pool clean, safe, and swim-ready in no time.

1. Skim, Brush, and Vacuum

  • Skim surface debris daily with a long-handled net to remove leaves, bugs, and pollen.

  • Brush walls and floor at least twice a week to dislodge algae and dirt from tiles, steps, and corners.

  • Vacuum thoroughly once the loose debris is brushed down—either manually or with an automatic pool cleaner.

2. Check and Balance Water Chemistry

  • Test pH and chlorine levels with a reliable kit; aim for pH 7.4–7.6 and free chlorine 1–3 ppm.

  • Adjust alkalinity (ideal range 80–120 ppm) with alkalinity increaser or decreaser.

  • Shock the pool after heavy use, storms, or algae growth to eliminate contaminants and restore sparkle.

3. Clean or Replace Your Filter

  • Cartridge filters: remove and spray down; replace annually if worn.

  • Sand filters: backwash when pressure gauge rises 8–10 psi above clean level.

  • Diatomaceous earth (DE) filters: backwash, then recharge with fresh DE powder.

4. Inspect Pool Equipment

  • Pump and motor: listen for unusual noises or vibration.

  • Skimmer and pump baskets: empty weekly to ensure proper water flow.

  • Heater and chlorinator: check connections and operation before firing up.

5. Establish a Regular Maintenance Routine

  • Weekly checklist: skim, brush, vacuum, test water, and inspect equipment.

  • Monthly tasks: deep-clean filter, clean tile line, and check pool structure for cracks.

  • Seasonal service: schedule a professional inspection at the start and end of summer.
